Customization has been a big trend this season, with names, quotes and even Instagram handles being stamped across jackets, bags and the like. I’m a sucker for anything personalized, growing up in the South where pretty much everything is monogrammed.
What I love about calligraphy is that it brings a little more freedom to the customization trend. Unlike patches and embroidery, with calligraphy you can create, write and/or design exactly what you want. But the best part about it? It’s really easy to do yourself, and who doesn’t love a good DIY.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
A denim jacket (I’ve linked up a few of my favorites above)
1 bottle of fabric paint in the color of your choice
1 piece of chalk or a pencil
1 fine-to-medium tip paint brush
HOW TO DO IT:
STEP 1: Choose the color fabric paint you want to use. You can’t go wrong with black or white, but really any color will work. If you’re customizing something with a darker wash indigo, a lighter color works best, while black and darker colors are good for light wash or chambray styles.
STEP 2: Now, you have to decide what you want to write or draw. I chose ‘Don’t Look Back’ because I’ve got a thing for puns :). The beauty of using paitn is that anything goes! Choose an inspiring quote that speaks to you or a symbol that represents your lifestyle.
STEP 3: Start sketching the outline of what you want with a pencil or chalk to make sure you get the sizing and lines right. Once that’s done, you can start painting.
STEP 4: Use the fine-to-medium tip brush and start carefully painting over your outline. If you’re not a pro calligrapher, don’t worry—any hand lettering will look great, whether it’s a cute cursive or bold block letters. And don’t be afraid to take your time. You can do a few coats if you want a bolder script.
STEP 5: Once you’re done, let it dry and voila—your very own customized denim jacket! Make sure you wait about three days before washing and wash inside out on delicate cycle whenever necessary.
