Although sometimes taboo, the old saying ‘opposites attract’ does ring true, especially in the fashion world. Things that aren’t technically supposed to go together oftentimes make the best combination. Ergo, lace and leather. Who doesn’t remember Britney’s infamous song off of her comeback album Circus? And even though Britney doesn’t alwaaays get it right (she’s been spotted on the worst dressed list just once or twice), this time, she was right on the money.

Believe it or not, I actually bought this romper for my rehearsal dinner when I got married last year. White lace is obviously a wedding staple. I loved it so much and got so many compliments, but was unsure whether I was going to be able to wear it again without looking too bridal. After noticing this trend all over the runways, I decided to toss on my leather moto jacket and see what happened. When I say it was an instant transformation, I am not exaggerating. I was actually surprised at how much I liked it despite the juxtaposition. I continued the contrast with black heels and a metallic tweed clutch and was definitely happy with the result. It was the perfect outfit for my weekly date night with the hubby.

So, if your favorite lace piece is feeling a little too frilly for the occasion, add some leather for that coveted cool factor. It honestly is the best of both worlds—downtown street style meets uptown sophistication. It also allows you to give old pieces (like this one) a brand-new life. I’ll definitely be adding this look back into my night-out rotation.
